The Person Behind the Work
Deborah Lukovich, PhD

I've always been drawn to situations where progress is blocked by something unseen—the root of a personal disempowering pattern or repeated conflict between romantic partners, misalignment within a leadership team, debilitating scarcity mentality within a nonprofit culture, or fear within communities of dreaming too big.
I spent most of my early career consulting with, leading, or volunteering for 75+ nonprofits, leadership teams, government agencies, and community initiatives. I noticed a repeating pattern:
The challenges people faced on the surface
often masked deeper, unseen dynamics.
I was known for my insatiable curiosity about each organization's story, my ability to assimilate a great deal of data and anecdotal evidence, and to turn complex concepts into practical strategies. I was affectionately called the cheerleader for small nonprofits; some even referred to me as a nonprofit therapist. My favorite testimonials were something like, "Deb, you helped us see that we could do more than we thought was possible."
Unraveling, Insights & Transformation
Unexpectedly, my own life began unraveling in ways I didn’t understand, nor could I comprehend my irrational need to pursue an MA/PhD in depth psychology. That journey transformed my life, leading to a renewed sense of purpose and expertise to hold space for others to uncover the root of challenges, facilitate conscious dialogue, and achieve the clarity and alignment needed for transformation.
Since then, I've provided depth coaching to 30+ individuals, leaders, and teams, and I've noticed another pattern. There is no such thing as separating the personal from the professional. Whether I'm working with a mother and daughter who are in conflict, or someone who can't get beyond what feels like an invisible ceiling in their career, or an executive who is experiencing inner turmoil because his personal values don't align with investor demands, or a community group demanding more from their local government, in every case, as personal insights emerge, tension eases in difficult situations, conversations shift, and new possibilities open—leading to meaningful, measurable results.
Grounded in depth psychology and C.G. Jung's theory of individuation, my work bridges the inner and outer worlds of leadership, relationships, and organizational life. Whether working with an executive team, facilitating a board retreat, or guiding someone through a personal transition, I teach people how to recognize the language of their unconscious and use it as a practical source of wisdom, clarity, and growth.
My work integrates multiple lenses, including neuroscience and systems theory, as well as other frameworks more familiar to clients. I translate complex ideas into practical language, tools, and habits that can be immediately applied and sustained.
Community Engagement
Throughout my life, I have been drawn to opportunities that bring together diverse people, organizations, and ideas around a shared purpose. Whether helping nonprofit leaders navigate change, launching civic initiatives, inspiring young women to become leaders, or building community partnerships, my work has focused on helping people discover a shared vision compelling enough to move them toward meaningful collective action.
Milwaukee has remained the community where I have chosen to invest my energy and leadership. From founding Friends of Bradford Beach and Women's Political Voice to helping launch Milwaukee Renaissance Academy and even being invited to contribute to Mount Mary's Summer Leadership Academy, I have consistently been drawn to work that expands opportunity and helps people imagine new possibilities for themselves and their communities.
Inspiring, Empowering, Expanding Consciousness
In all my presentations and workshops to women, nonprofit leaders, and community groups over the past thirty years, what they had in common was permission to envision a future that didn't exist yet, advocate for it, and expect to get it without apology.
During my two appearances at Mount Mary University's Women's Leadership program, I asked the college-age women to stand, raise their hand, and take the pledge for the President of the United States. Some of those women were moved to tears.
During gatherings attended by businesswomen, I shared research that even when women and men receive the same salary offers, men always ask for more and women typically don't, totaling a million dollars in lost earnings over a career. Simply asking for more could erase an earnings disparity for many women.
Being invited to Alverno University's Annual Community Conference twice allowed me to share insights I had gained throughout my PhD research about how deep collective wounds that men and women carry are preventing the deep connection we desire and stand in the way of saving our planet. The college-age women were visibly relieved when they realized they could feel compassion for how patriarchy has harmed men while prioritizing their own fight against misogynistic people and systems. The next year, a diverse group of students, alumni, faculty, and community members joined me for a discussion about the need to reconcile sexuality and spirituality, two of the most powerful human instincts that have not always been at odds with each other.

Exploring the Unseen
During a time when systems have become stagnant and are beginning to dismantle, but the new paradigm that many can feel isn't visible to most, anxiety about the future can feel unbearable. A hundred years ago, C.G. Jung's theories pointed toward what's happening today. I'm driven by his declaration that the fate of humanity depends upon the self-reflecting individual (not an exact quote). Out of the chaos is emerging a new way of thinking about what it means to be human, but it's not the mind that can sense it, for the mind is defensive about keeping the status quo.
Learning the language of your unconscious is the key to harnessing a deeper wisdom that's already inside you about what's emerging out there and how you will fit in. As an author, educator, podcaster, and speaker, I empower and inspire people to use depth psychology as a tool for self-reflection.
I share personal and collective insights, teach frameworks for exploring dreams and turning conflict into new insights, and open up a whole new world of alternative perspectives. When you see things through a new lens, everything changes.
I'm the author of four books, including When Sex Meets God: A Midlife Unraveling, Your Soul Is Talking. Are You Listening?, The Secret to Better Schools, and The Secret to Fundraising. I've defended a dissertation to secure my PhD (let me know if you'd like to read it). I'm also the host of Dose of Depth, where I've hosted 125+ conversations exploring dreams, relationships, leadership, psychological development, organizational culture, and social change. Enjoy 90+ articles on my blog, focused on exploring dreams, using friction as a doorway to new insights, leadership, psychological development, organizational culture, and social change.
